Purpose
Automated mining and discovery tools have recently started to emerge on the technology landscape. Business intelligence systems have incorporated content discovery techniques to automatically mine the corporate data looking for interesting and relevant patterns. Systems management companies have similarly launched technology to automatically discover IT assets and usage patterns (BMC/IDS Sheer). The next logical step of automated discovery is moving beyond assets and content to understanding the business processes encapsulated within the application systems.
This workshop discusses the concept of business process discovery. It explains why discovery is needed, compares several methodologies and techniques in current use, and describes how discovery can yield valuable insights for business improvement initiatives. Moreover, the relevance of business process discovery is shown to be key in the area of revitalization and transformation of legacy systems in organizations.
